Guys,
The thing with PE, is She’s Special to me. I know that doesn’t make an sense but its true.. The real ship was was a little fight, and she proved it in WW 2... That part of the reason i liked her and always will.. But anyway, part of the reason, is Her part in Operation Crossroads. What are the pros and cons of a ship that size: she is 4-feet 9-inchs long... What do you guys thing? Do get me wrong on this, i thing some of the WW1 ships are cool, but im to to fond of anyu of them ok.. What WW 2, ships are good for a beginner, like me?

PE is decent, but as a rookie you won't be sinking anyone with her.

I fully expect to sink no one but myself.

Although I have never had one of these ships myself. I have seen a few.
I really like the boat myself, and as it is fairly big, and also fairly heavy, it should be a pretty forgiving first boat for you. You could do better, but you also could do much worse as choices go.
I would have to say that the one thing that sticks out most about this cruiser, is that it is too long to sideways in the trunk of most smallish cars, and probably won't fit crossways in the back seats of them either.
So as long as you have a vehicle that will accomodate the ship for transporting it to events, then you will be fine.
Hope this helps.

That should be one of the first things we ask a newbie!
How big of a boat can you transport?

Nothing is worse than getting ready for your first battle, and finding that the boat doesn't fit in the car. He's just checking to be sure that doesn't happen to you. A small part of the reason I chose the Viribus Unitis class was its small size, so I could fit four of them in my trunk during construction. Once complete, I could fit two plus gear for battle days.

I dont fell like the van or trank, could get up to maryland, but we never tryed it yet, so i dont really know, i know the car can make the trip, we been to both the IRCWCC Spring and Falls regionals and PG is 4 Feet/ 9inch long.. and Im 5 feet/ 2inchs.. that is why, we take mom cars.. but if you guys saw this: the way my mom trank is, there is a way i can open the center arm rest and put her bow, through there, then put two blanckets on either side of her, so she dosent fell over, then it come to mom and i slowly getting her out when we get then, then i can carrier her, and all that..  she only 19 lbs, But what are the pros and cons, of gett a wheeled Trailer?

Nikki,

If Battlers Connection doesn't have a deck/sub-deck kit, try and make your own as mentioned earlier. If you have acess to a power saw table and want to make your own "deck kit" it can be done with patience. When you order the hull, get a set of plans with it. These are important and will assist you throughout your build. Get some 1/8th plywood from the local hobby shop that you can trace the deck onto from the plans onto the wood. This will be done twice. Once for the deck that sits on top and one that will be the sub-deck that holds it all together. (Look at the pictures of the deck/sub-decks on Battlers Connection and see what I mean.)

After the two decks are cut out, then you can cut out portions of the subdeck where you will access the interior of the boat after you install it to the fiberglass hull. The deck will then sit on top of the subdeck. Follow me? As you go along slowly, you will be measuring the fit of the two decks as they will fit inside the hull. After you are happy with the fit of the two decks, you will then use an adhesive to attach them. Work slowly to get the fit right. That is how I do it and others can advise you the way they do it too. .

It will take some time and patience when building your ship. But if you have someone from a local club, they can help you with all this. Hands on help is great! Building the PE will take you some time, but the winter months is when to do this as it is too cold to go swimming if the boat sinks...even here in California.

Take a look at some of the build threads from other guys on this site and see how they do it. Read as much as you can and learn what you need to do to have an operational boat when spring comes around. Building a ship, especially a first one, can be frustrating and you will need to focus on the tasks at hand. Try and get some help from those near you as we all want you to suceed and have fun in the hobby.

That's my two cents worth and am looking forward to seeing how you PE comes along!

take care and good luck,

Steve ;-D

Nikki,
the easiest thing to do is get some pink insulation foam at Lowes or another hardware store. You can use that as it is easy to cut and not very heavy...pretty cheap too. Take a look at your plans and see how wide and long the superstructure is. Measure how high it is too. You can trace the superstructure onto a blank piece of paper and then cut it out and place it on top of the foam and glue it onto it. Then with your table saw, slowly cut out the foam superstructure along the traced paper. As to the height, let's say that the superstructure is one and a half inches high. Just measure the foam and put them together until they look like the plans. Follow what I mean?

Remember, we want our ships to look like the real thing and you can detail it up as much or as little as you want. But, start off with a simple superstructure and use the foam for your smoke stacks too. You can make the masts out of brass tubing like the kind you will get from Battlers Connection for the propeller shafts. Brass tubing is available at your hobby shop in different sizes and works great for fake gun barrels on secondary guns.

Take your time when you do this and practice with the foam, cutting and gluing until you get the hang of it. The PE was a lovely cruiser and will be a fun build. As I said before, work slowly and seek help from giys in your area and here on the website. And look at some of the other boat builds in the build section. You will see a lot of tricks that will work for you. Take it slow and be patient as you go. It is a lot of fun building everything and watching it come together!

Steve
