R/C Naval Combat

I just recieved an ATC2k camera (or 2) and will test and post results shortly. I have wanted one for a while and the price dropped to a point I had to try it.

I will say its larger than I thought from the pictures but is still smaller than any camcorder.

I got the camera out of the package and tested it out. First of all I had a cigar shaped camera in mind, but in your hand its a monster. Its 4.25 inches long, 2 inches high, and 2 inches wide. The internal memory of 32MB formated to 27mb give you 55 seconds. When you insert a memory card it shows how much time is left to record. A blank 256MB SD card showed 7:45 so a 2GB card should record 8 times that or just under an hour which should be fine for most purposes.

It weighs in at 8 ounces with the cap screwed on so I might not be able to put it on the Baden or will I? I am not sure what others have used to record video so it may be smaller than some of the other cameras used.

The video quality was very good. You can pull the SD Card and plug it into the memory card reader on your pc or take the included audio video cable and connect it to a TV for direct playback. The controls were easy to use and the video looked great. There is a link below for my test video in a bath tub. Click the 'View in High Quality' for best results.

It doesn't do well in dim light, as a matter of fact in dim light I got black frames in the video. I didn't anticipate using it in the dark anyway.

In the package it includes the camera, carrying bag, two sizes of velcro straps, handlebar bracket, rubber strap and plastic camera adapter for the strap, usb and a/v cable, silicone grease, instuctions... the works.

i have a vendor that sells all types of electronics. It cost more on ebay and other sites so I got it from my vendor.

The picture was wild as I was trying to see if it would float at all... no it doesnt.

I am thinking of making a sink-cam out of it and maybe adding some lights below deck to see how it floods...

One of the reasons I opted against doing an internal-view is that I couldn't find a view that's easily recognizable as the interior of the ship. I could get bits and pieces, some of which were even recognizable as parts of a ship, but there were too many bits and pieces of boat guts in the way for a high-quality interior view. I'm not sure about Fast Gun boats, though, so that might be different.

Absolutely! But mainly as I bought two cameras and had heard somone mention wanting to see the inside of the ship as it took on damage and sink. I have been mostly influenced by the gun cam video you put up. I have always been facinated by video on R/C models of all types and now I can do it.

Of course the first warship combat video I ever saw (First Casualty) was apparently loaded with subliminal messages as I was immediately compelled to order a VDT from BC. Shame on you! :)

Hey John, I got one of the cameras a few weeks ago and love it. I was going to turn one of my a monitors into a "combat camera" platform for battleing events. Attach it securely on top and follow the action on the pond. I was also going to build a safe housing for it against any flying objects that may stry towrds it. (ouch!)

The ATC2K only needs one small shield over the front. Unless you're feeling lucky, at which point you don't put any shield at all. The only possible damage it can take is from a direct hit to the lens, and that's such a small target that it's next to impossible to hit. My own camera and camcorder both have larger lenses, and they've been used in combat for years without protection. Then again, 2" from the waterline is a lot more dangerous than 2' from the waterline, so you'll have to decide.

Does anyone have any pictures of the ATC2K mounted on the boat so I can see what it looks like. Actually any camera setup you would care to share would be great. Thanks

I don't have any photos right now. What I've done in the past, though, is to mount it on top of one of the rotating turrets of a large, stable Big Gun battleship. One of the mounts is well-suited for attaching to turrets. You can either duct-tape it to the turret, or (much safer) screw the mount down to the turret. Either way, make sure the turret cover itself is secure enough that it won't fall off if the camera gets hit.

Wheres the best place to buy one of these cameras? Any way to buy from your dist.? Ive found them as low as $93 with free shipping. Just wondering if there was a better price out there before i buy one. thanks

What would be really cool is to have a couple of these mounted on a pole underwater to film ships sinking during a Nats or local battle.

My original thought was to put one inside the ship and maybe just below the surface. However any underwater filming would need clear water and alot of light.

I want to put led lights inside the hull so I can see how it fills as the battle rages on. I thought it might be useful.
