Hey guys, guess its not really propaganda to bring in new people, but more for members as it is.

A few years ago, as some of you may recall, i began a newsletter titled something along the lines of The Buckeye Battle, a monthly newletter about the events of BBS, as well as photos, member of the month, etc. Subscription was free for the time being i believe, i even had subscriptions from New York, the Carolinas, etc. However only a few issues made it off the press as cost was running up making it so i would have to charge a minimal fee and didn't want to have to make any commitments, and because not much was going on in the BBS! i mean, we had a montly get together but that was about it.

However, now with this website bridging the gap between all the clubs.... any interest in a new newsletter? One that covered all clubs, all types of combat? I'm willing to do it if there is enough interest and enough support... i'd need people to fill me in on whats going on with their clubs, you could post ships for sale, comical reports of your undertakings, advertisements for battles, even advertise for a product your making or something.

I'm thinking to make it easier on cost (hoping to keep it free!) i can just upload it to a website. I have webspace i could use, or if someone else with a more developed one such as this would like to host it that is fine with me. I'm hoping if i do it to keep it as a .pdf file so everyone can read, download, and even print it if they desire. Plus by keeping it non-snail mail i can keep it in color, as i believe the last issue of the Buckeye Battle had to go black and white to save printing cost.

Let me know if there is any interest.

I would be interested in helping you make this happen. My original plans were to have a newsletter along with the forum & r/cNavalCombat toolsets. I can work with you on creating a "newsletter environment" here on the site, what do you think you would need?

Also, I created a newsletter emailing system so people would sign up for it & it would mail them automatically every month. Not sure how well it would work with someone else being the editor... but that doesn't mean we can't give it a go! :)

I'm moving this to website enhancements.

sounds great! I'm not sure exactly what i would need... i mean as far as making it would go. I need to figure out how to make word docs into .pdf but that shouldn't be hard. As for the mailing system, sounds great! i was hoping for something like that!

I could us a good suggestion for a name....

i suck at that stuff, all i can think of is "Commence Firing" and that doesn't sound like a name. lol

Also, if you could possibly set up a subscription form for it?

I'll need people to submit stuff to it to, so everyone out there please send pictures, upcoming events, reviews, stories, etc. anything rc naval related.... even if its not combat, if its cool eough we'll put it in when we have some extra room. But please, this will be dependent on everyone... i can only write so many articles... and then i have to put it all together. Please submit as much as you can. My email is kennylibben@yahoo.com ... just mention its for the newsletter. THANKS!

O yeah, anyone got any suggestions for it feel free to let me know!

Okay, is anyone out there willing to help out?

I at least need "liasons" from the groups.... i dont know what you guys are doing around the world, so i need someone to at least give me enough info for an article. If nothing is happening thats okay but i mean if there was a battle or something let me know the details!

Also, if you'd be willing to actually write the article (which would be more accurate so i dont mess things up) i could definently use writers too!

So before JustinScott and i get this going, we need confirmation of support. Is anyone interested in subscribing to it (free), and is there anyone willing to write or at least inform me about stuff? Or if you know someone in your group that could. The more you submit the more your group (and you) will be mentioned in it.... if you dont submit anything i cant mention you because most likely i dont even know you or your club exists!

JustinScott is willing to spend alot of time writing code and whatnot for this, and i'm willing to spend alot of time doing the newsletter.... but we need to know if this is even possible. So please give us feedback on your thoughts.

One thing I thought of is you can publish some of the conversations that are talked about on the forum. There are plenty of good ideas brewing here. Publish the ideas, the struggles, and the conclusions...

You have my support, this project of yours sounds interesting. I would be willing to help in anyway I can, but being new to all this and working on getting the new club out here on its feet I really don't know how much help I can be.

Yeah, a series about the trials & tribulations of a new club... Choices made, what worked, what didnt! That would be interesting.

The past few days really made me realize how important a newsletter could be. When the boards went down (grumble grumble); an emergency newsletter could have been released telling everyone what was wrong with the boards & what to expect. I think a lot of people got frustrated because they couldn't tell what was going on. (Me included... grumble grumble)

Why the site went down:

Hey Klibben, my brother and I wrote a pair of articles for our club's newsletter, one about minefields and one about the adventures of his ship in its first battle. If you want I can send them to you for inclusion in The Scuttlebutt.

I thought I had written a third, about my cruiser in action after its refit, but after searching my computer high and low, and even searching old emails, I can honestly say it was never written. But hey, this gives me an excuse to write it! Actually, that brings up a question. Would I be able to include some photos as proof that my tale is true?

Support is growing! i've now got a liason with the OAF ... be sure to spread the word to other people you know! if they would like to submit anything or even just sign up as a liason have them email me!

i've also got some naval artists working for free to get some good pictures on the newsletter to spice it up a bit visually!

Naval artists? Ooh, that sounds like fun! I wonder if they could do a dramatic painting of my Spahkreuzer sinking King George V?

Interesting... Start thinking of what kind of internet support you will need; ie what online toolset will help you.

hmmm... i have no clue. what exactly do you mean? i figured i'd make it a PDF and then just send it to people as that so they can easily download and even print if wanted.

I guess there's your Internet support requirement:

- Allow (specific person; list of authorized) to upload .pdf file.
- Immediately/automatically send as e-mail attachment to distribution list.
- Send individual messages rather than a large group "blast", to avoid triggering spam filters & protect addresses of recipients.

John's right, that is a requirements listing. That is what I'm looking for. "How you want to use the system."

I would also recommend against PDF... My personal opinion of PDF is they are highly overrated. I would rather send out a standard or HTML newsletter. They are smaller, easier to handle, to view (no special viewer) & to make.. and the dialup users will not get pissed off from the size... Why do you want a pdf?

I'm not the one being asked, but I personally like .pdf for document distribution. The viewer is ubiquitous, because almost every site in the world uses .pdf for document distribution, so everybody's got it. Almost nobody has Acrobat itself, though, so your stuff is hard for recipients to modify. It's easy to make .pdfs - I use a free module called PDF995 that works just like a printer, except that it "prints" to .pdf files from any Windows program.

Who uses dial-up anymore??

Yes, i liked PDF because its a newsletter put online... not an online newsletter you have to go through hell to make look official when you print it out. I know alot of people like to print out news they get online and take it to build sessions and whatnot. as a PDF all they have to do is hit print...and i have never heard of someone not being able to view a pdf (not saying its impossible, just that its so rare i've never heard of it). As HTML or something else it may look nice in email but its going to look terrible when they print it out...
