The angle of the Atlantic bow seems to match the Iowa more closely than the NC, and the wooden brace in the middle suggests that there was some modification or extension made in that area. The hull was photographed at an angle, which makes it hard to see the full length, but it seems to be very long. I can't see the stern to see the shaft arrangement. My bet is something longer than an NC since the middle appears to be extended and the nose doesn't match, but with an external armor belt and torpedo bulge that the Iowa and SoDak don't have. | | | |

The Montana is one of the few giant ships with enough guns to justify its size in Big Gun combat. Other giant ships like Yamato and H-39 are simply too big for the number of guns they carry. Their eight or nine 1/4" guns are spread over a very large area, making what would be a powerful broadside on a smaller ship into something far less scary. Montana's twelve guns are split into two densely packed groups, either one of which carries as much or more firepower than smaller ships can bring to bear.
