Servers are like closets.  If you don't open them on occasion; mice will destroy everything.

Server fixed (hopefully)! Mice left homeless.
Just when you think you know the answers, I change the questions.

You seriously got mice in your server? I've seen ants in closed systems before, but not mice. You need to get your cat trained better!

I don't understand how the government is unable to do something about hackers and spammers.

because a good number of them are not in the US or anywhere we can really track them to and extradite. that and unless they actually go after something important, there are an awful lot of them out there and it takes resources to track them down.

Well. that seems to be true for many of the hackers but spammers contact me about business opertunities with national companies and they are certainly available in the U.S. I get ads for Visa, MasterCard, banks, etc.

Spam isn't illegal or dangerous, why would the gov't do anything about it? Its annoying but a good email filter will catch the vast majority of it these days, if you're still getting tons of spam in your inbox you're doing something wrong.

Actually I would go after the first person to fall for the email spam. If that person didn't fall for it we wouldn't be stuck with spam

I'm more aligned with bb26, I'd rather keep the govt out of as much as possible... They'll only mess it up. The only way to stop spam is to stop falling for it; make them go get a real job. But nope.. There's always some idiot who'll pay.

I did some work for a spammer once actually; it was quite incredible what people will fall for. He did an experiment for me once... He spammed a semi-trashy "booty call" email; we got everything from mariage proposals to photos of old guys exposing themselves... It was unbelievable.

Oh and no I can't protect it... Nothing is unbreakable or hack proof given enough time. All you can do is be less enticing than the next website to the right. Even your online banks aren't hack proof (I used to work for Chase) all they can do is try to make a hack take so much time it's not worth it or the stolen data is already expired.

Agreed Justin, even in the "real" world physical locks just make it take longer to open whatever it is they protect, they don't really stop anyone. Its amazingly easy to pick a lock once you know how they work and have to tools required. Not that I would do or condone such a thing.

Justin,
Is there anything we can do to help you watch this site?
