Oh, boy, do I

Bretagne is a fine looking ship! Moggy is very popular as well, of course.
Battling: SMS Scharnhorst, SMS Baden Building: HMS KGV (Drives, pumps water, guns are in but not plumbed) MN Edgar Quinet (Hull done) Drydock/Mothballed: Rus Evstafi, DKM Lutzow, HMS Invincible Plus 20-odd other projects, according to my Boy Scouts who thoughtfully counted them for me.

I too am interested in the earlier French ships. The problem is getting any sort of plans. Very little survived WWII from the french naval records. They were successfully hidden from the Germans but the tunnels were damp, not a good thing for paper records. I think these earlier ships could be fairly decent battlers but it is hard to tell as none of the drawings I have found so far are clear enough to even tell how many rudders they had!

They probably didn't bother designing them with rudders. Rudders are just a waste of material once the ship sinks!

The french archives site has tif scans of the Bretagne plans, supposedly the 1913 layout - unsure if any refits beyond that point are included.

Provence is here:

http://www.servicehistorique.sga.defense.gouv.fr/02fonds-collections/banquedocuments/planbato/planbato/fichebato/fichbato.php?id=376

You'd still have to do some work to scale them and clean them in to a condition to build a combat model from, but for instance...

looks complete enough to develop a hull..

They are, I have some of them cleaned up and scaled, certainly good enough for building a hull and SS...

No problem; After consulting with the wife, I have scaled back my day job to one day per week while I finish my nursing school, so that I can have some weekend time to unwind, which in turn will give me more time to do plans and help build the site.

I am also going to do some searching amongst the free CAD programs for an easy to use one that will let me do curves more easily than GIMP (which is a graphics manipulation program, not a CAD program, anyway) so that I can draw some nice clean plans to post with no provisos on the quality. Any recommendations are cheerfully accepted (no 30-day trials, please, just free/shareware).

I use Inventor in my Engineering class, and it does curves really well, but Im not sure if its free. It's awesome though, look into it.

Wow!

I spent a lot of time maybe 6-7 years back and there was nothing available anywhere beyond some very basic line drawings (aka Janes).  I know that there were plans to get some french material on line at that time but nothing actually existed.  I did luck out and get to talk to a member of the french marine aviation society at that time.  (Having spent 5 years living there and still having friends in France helps...)

PROVENCE is now an official project.  If anyone else is interested in a Fiberglass hull we can look at building a proper plug.  If not, I will probably build a one-off.  This in not a high priority project but eventially she will join her sisters in my personal fleet.

Montcalm, Suffren, Richelieu, Mogador, Surcouf

Algerie is also a project for me eventually.

nwmike,  Just ask, I'm in Oly and have a few spares you can borrow...

I suggest you look into Alibre. It's got two different versions, one is free and the other is (relatively) cheap. They also have 50% off promotions every few months, so getting a good price shouldn't be an issue. The difference between versions is that they turn off some of the advanced features for the free version, and limit it to only a few objects in the assembly mode.

I'm still hoping to get a Bayern class built this spring (waiting on some reference material and plans to arrive) - but if I can't get it ready in time then I'd be more than happy to run a loaner if you have spares.

Not to derail the thread too badly, but is there a schedule yet for this year?

I'm looking for interest in the PROVENCE hull.  With my schedule, it will be a major miracle to have a plug ready in the summer of 2010.  Maybe a couple of hulls that fall, maybe 2011.  There just isn't the time to pull the plans and get the properly scaled up to 144th then get the rib detail done and cut out. Lots of tedious work and very limited spare time.

I may be looking for a hull around then, and a provence would fit the bill. I think you should go for it.

There were three of the Bretagne class (including Provence) and I think there were three of the Corbet series.  Within the margin of error there may have been others.  I can name almost all of the large french ships from WWII but only know a few from before then.  (Need a RAM update...)[script removed]

Tugboat, do you have plans for: aircraft carriers USS Wasp, USS Ranger, IJN Kaga, or any Japanese CVL ?

Or for any passenger liner/troopship? I just finished reading a great book called "The Only way to Cross" thats about the history of the passenger liner, which left me highly interested in building one.

Pacific Front does sell plans for Kaga but they wanted $55 plus shipping so I'd rather find them elsewhere.

hmmmm... I have Shokaku/Zuikaku, Akagi/Kaga, HMS Colossus/FS Arromanches, USS Charger/HMS Charger (or HMS Biter)/FS Dixmude (CVEs). I have several convoy ships, but none of them are troopships Other than charger, the only plans I have for US CVs are the Lex and another biggie whose name escapes me (pre-coffee).

Pacific Front sells Miyukikai plans at a 100% markup (actually higher, because they charge shipping too). You can order straight from my friend Haruo-san in Japan (by Int'l M.O.) and get the same plans for $24, shipped. Takes about 2 weeks to get here. I personally guarantee that you will be thrilled with the quality of the plans. They really are awesome. Ask anyone who's bought a set

Address is: http://www2.odn.ne.jp/miyukikai/sub2.htm
