Well, I feel honored. Our site just graduated from piddly little site to something that somebody wanted to HACK.

I must admit I'm impressed. Whoever he was, he must be quite clever. Not only did he get all those pretty dialogs to pop-up and annoy all you fine folks; but he also gained administrative access! (That's one step down from me, one step up from the moderators.)

So, I think I've fixed the hole that gave him his power (forgive me for not explaining it, I don't need to give anyone else ideas). SOOO theoretically, he can't do that again.

I know I've figured out what was causing all the pretty dialogs; must say... low-tech rules. What he did was the electronic equivalent of putting post-it notes on your screen, very cool.

What does it mean to you? I don't think anything, unless you downloaded any of those popups. If so, email me immediately or call me @ ( five fIv one ) ate oh for - cix ate fiV zer-oh.

MODERATORS: Please change your passwords. I can't think of anyway he could get @ them... but just do it, just in case. Everyone else, don't worry about it... unless you want to.

Cheers,
jks

Ahhh... and west coast guys should actually thank him... as a result, I figured out how to change the date back to pacific. :) East coast, just another good reason to curse all hackers.

As the old song goes: Praise the lord (we're back to the correct time), and pass the ammunition (to discourage other hackers)!

Indeed. Great work. As annoying as these things are do you not find them a bit interesting? Sort of like a physician and a disease?

A bit... Mostly because I like to match wits against someone in virtual computer programming battle. --> OK, I lied... What I really wanted was to work on my Tirpitz last night, but some bastard stole that from me. Must admit however, I found it interesting once I figured it out.

There are basically two types of developers; those that like to build and those that like to maintain. I am definitely a builder. I love going to work in the morning not knowing if I can actually pull off the BS I promised the day before. (So far my record's perfect, BTW) But get grumpy really quickly if I have to go back and fix something that I've already done, I see it kind of like saying something twice... (Stupid computer, weren't you listening the first time??)

Either way, I appreciate the kind words. I was actually upset I had to take the forum offline for so long, but I'd rather close the site than hurt it's users.

If you unfortunately downloaded the virus / malware / whatever it was... The first thing I'd do is try this:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Is is a free online virus scanner. It won't replace an always-on system scanner... but it works in a pinch.

If this doesn't work, contact me. We will get you fixed.

Justin,
Thank you for all your work on the forum. You are doing a great job.
My computer was infected and I just got done re-installing StopSign. Cleaned everything including the "Trojan virus". However, I do still have this red circle with the white X on my task bar. How do you get rid of that?
Thanks again for your efforts.

Thats what I got, don't click on it or you will reinstall the virus. I'm working with a friend on the problem as I type (My software was only able to quarantine it, not erase it)

Thanks Mark for the info. StopSign from what I hear is very good. I ran the cleaning system twice and it says that my computer is "CLEAN". I'll wait to hear what you come up with.
The person that did this should be hauled before the mast.
Thanks again,

Mark, Justin and all,
I just sent an email to StopSign telling them about the red circle X to see if there is something that can be done. I have used Stopsign for years but let the subscription run out. I am now signed up again.
Several years ago I had a computer that was infected. I recieved a message from StopSign that my computer was infected and to shut the computer off for 24 hours. When I came back on-line I had an email from StopSign telling me what they had found, what they had to do to fix it and that my computer was virus free. I never had a computer problem after that. It is well worth the $7.00 a month.
I will post info when I get it.
Thanks,

Can someone post a screen shot of the little icon? Press Print Screen, then go to paint, then press CTRL-V, Save the file as a photo and upload it to the forum as you normally would.

I'm not getting near that thing again. As of this morning I have not heard anything from Stopsign. When I do I will forward any info I get from them.
