3 channels. But you may want a pump switch, which would be one more channel for a total of 4.
Battling: SMS Scharnhorst, SMS Baden Building: HMS KGV (Drives, pumps water, guns are in but not plumbed) MN Edgar Quinet (Hull done) Drydock/Mothballed: Rus Evstafi, DKM Lutzow, HMS Invincible Plus 20-odd other projects, according to my Boy Scouts who thoughtfully counted them for me.

1 for Fwd/Rev
1 for Port/Star cannons
1 for Haymaker/Stern cannons (if so used)
1 for Pump
1 for Rudder

The first 4 could be on Interfaces and the last is a servo

I recommend it.

It has enough channels to run 4 different gun configs/boards , Bismarck has 4 turrets, so does Arizona,

1speed,

1rudder,

a channel for pump

a spare channel (Lights)

gun left/right

gun back/ other gun back

if you are serious, you won't have to do this twice. Plus everything has adjustable endpoints and a lot more good features. You also can get spare recievers for second boats, no glitching and lakeside support from others if you have questions. Also easy to modify to put gun buttons on.

yes, 6 channels

What everyone is saying that if you can afford it, go with a DX6i radio with 6 channels and it will work for most any warship you have or will make in the future.

I also recommend the spectrum dx6i, ubermelon, but it can wait until late in your boat build. It can also be used for many relatively cheap almost ready to fly aircraft if you later decide you want to try that.

Ben, there is a really big difference between stupid and inexperienced. Don't slam yourself like that. You are not stupid at all, like most guys your age you just haven't seen or talked much about rc stuff yet. Inexperience goes away with time. But don't expect to learn the answers about what makes boats perform well quickly either, everybody in the hobby still learns new things every time they work on or battle their ships, wether they have been battlers for 1 year or 33 years.

Yes... the great philosopher von Tugboat once said: 'There are plenty of people in this world willing to tear you down. Don't be one of them.'

A good way to learn about the hobby and what's involved/recommended is to go to the main club websites, among which are:
www.mwci.org

 www.ircwcc.org

 http://www.westernwarshipcombat.com/

https://ntxbg.org/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php (make sure you read the articles in the knowledge base (it's a button on the left from their main page)

Steve Reichnbach's page, which has lots of pictures of his ships, inside and out, and a page of building tips:http://shipyard.hi2matt.com/

Brian K's page on scratchbuilding 2 Vanguard class battleships. Not complete, but a good guide on building the hull: http://chemistry1.che.georgiasouthe...index.html

Chris Pierce's website: http://www.scrapcombatships.com/commodore/

THere are many many more, and I have to get out to my shop to get Baden ready for a battle in 2 weeks. Read those and you will learn a lot about how things are done in model warship combat.

@ other people whose site is not listed above - sorry! Feel free to reply in this topic and share sites you think that Ben would benefit from. I am CERTAIN that I've missed a few.

Play station controller!  Yes, and no,  there are modifications to it to make it work.  The Wester Warship people have one method of modifing the controller and the R/C Tank Combat seem to have another.  But the DX6i is still the best for someone who is not an engineer.
