does anyone know what size motors i should use for a nelson, its 3 fin props 2 shafts.

I used a pair of Mabuchi RS-540s on mine, same as I use for just about everything else. 6V, direct drive. I think the props are 25-degree pitch, but can't say for sure. I do know for sure that they're not oversized.

I used the same on mine, twin 540's, with twin BC gearbox's, GB500, and 25 pitch 1 3/4 inch props. It had no problems getting on speed, and the motors ran cool.

also what does the 540 refer to? i have seen this everywhere but a lot of the electronics sites i have looked at dont have any rating like that?

Its just the 500 series motor, usually called 540, or 550. The Grapner 500 is really a Mubachi, and works great, but you can get cheaper ones from the wholesale electronic stores. Johnson motors are one, but they are not as efficient, and I find they run hotter, but do work and are cheap.

It refers to the size of the can of the motor. Not all 550's are created equal, depends on the internals and such.

i recently have been told by a member of the AUSBG they are running two dicksmiths P 9004 6v motors and they run cool. id say these are nothing on the maubachi motors in efficency but i think they are around 70% which seems to be fairly high for low grade dc motors. and they are $2 each plus postage so i dont think i can go wrong with them till i find some mubachi's around somewhere.

yup, its the length and works just like you said, the can of a 550 is 5.5cm long

HMS Rodney runs two direct 385 mabuchi's to two 35mm 4-blade props and has no problems with battery life or motor heat, she keeps running at speed long after ships with larger, less efficient motors slow down. I sail her all day on one set of batteries.

darren are you running 2 6v 7aH batteries?? eg a combined 6V 14aH system? i think thats what i brought ages ago. ofcourse silly me left them sitting around and now they are really only useful as large paper weights or for contaminating water supplies

Rodney runs two 6V 12Ah batteries.

Excellent refereneces guys. I will keep this in mind on the set up for this class or similiar ships of equivilant displacement.

Yes, there's just enough room between the batteries to fit a 20 oz bottle, and still keep your blast sheilds off the inner hull by about 10mm

very nice, do you know of anyone who sells AUSBG certified cannons darren? ive been told richard may or may not sell them anymore apparently he was giving up making them

What's the speed of the Australian Big Gun Nelson? Aren't their ships slower than in the MWC and IRCWCC?
